The Llano Uplift: Ideal for growing world-class grapes
During the 2020 pandemic and looking to reestablish their Texas roots, Charles and Diana Karren had one criteria in choosing the land for a future vineyard. As they are farmers first, the land had to be the best in order to make the best grapes. The Karrens had a proven track record of 25 years of producing some of the best grapes in Sonoma County. Now, they wanted to repeat that success in Texas. After evaluating multiple sites in the Texas Hill Country, they chose a 20 acre property in 2021 north of the town of Fredericksburg on the way to Enchanted Rock. The property was unique as it is part of the Llano Uplift, a unique geological formation in the Texas Hill Country that offers several advantages for growing world-class grapes, making it an ideal location for Land of Promise wines:
Unique Soil Composition: The Llano Uplift is characterized by ancient granite outcroppings and soils derived from the weathering of this granite, as well as limestone and sandstone. These well-drained soils are low in nutrients, which stresses the vines and leads to more concentrated flavors in the grapes.
Favorable Climate: The region experiences warm days and cool nights, which is ideal for grape ripening. The warm days allow the grapes to develop sugars and flavors, while the cool nights help to retain acidity, resulting in balanced wines. The area also benefits from winds, which help to cool the vineyard at night.
Elevation: Our vineyard elevation is at 1,200 feet, which means Land of Promise has cooler temperatures and more significant diurnal temperature variations (difference between daytime and nighttime temperatures), which contribute to the development of complex flavors in grapes.
Water Availability: The region is located above the Hickory Aquifer, which provides a reliable source of water for irrigation. This is crucial in the often hot and dry Texas climate.
Terroir: The combination of soil, climate, and elevation creates a unique terroir in the Llano Uplift. This terroir imparts distinctive characteristics to the grapes grown there, which are reflected in the wines produced.
In essence, the Llano Uplift stands out due to its ancient and exposed Precambrian rocks, creating a distinct geological, topographic, and ecological landscape that sets it apart from the surrounding areas of Texas. These factors, combined with our passion, expertise and experience of growing grapes, makes this area an ideal location for Land of Promise to make high-quality, exceptional wines.
Lux Libertas
We named Land of Promise’s first Texas wine Lux Libertas. Our family history embodies 200 years of Texans and 200 years of Texas immigrants. Whether our family's roots lie overseas or here in the United States, Texas has embraced each generation. This spirit of welcome and liberty inspired our Texas wine, Lux Libertas. Echoing Stephen F. Austin's vision of Texas as the "Light of Liberty," we celebrate our family’s eight generations who have embraced the Texas spirit. This Land of Promise Lux Libertas wine, crafted from grapes in the Hill Country, is a tribute to every Texan who cherishes freedom and liberty.
